Data Recovery

What Is Data Recovery?

Data recovery is a technology used to rescue data from storage media that has become inaccessible due to a malfunction or failure. These malfunctions can have a variety of causes, including computer breakdowns, user errors, improper handling, or damage to the storage media itself.

Data recovery can be compared to a rescue team saving a driver trapped inside a car after an accident. While the rescue team may flip the overturned car back and move it slightly, they do not carry out repairs.

Similarly, in data recovery, the goal is to minimally operate the damaged storage media just enough to retrieve the data stored inside, without attempting to fully repair the device.

How Data Recovery Differs from Manufacturer Repairs

Let’s use a car and a car accident as an analogy to explain the difference.

Manufacturer repair services for computers are like auto repair shops that fix the damaged car after an accident. However, they do nothing for the injured driver — treating the driver’s injuries is the job of a hospital.

In the same way, manufacturer repairs aim to restore the computer to a working condition. They do not recover any data. Instead, they typically return the computer to its factory state, which results in the loss of all data stored inside.

The same applies to manufacturers of hard drives and memory cards. Their repair services do not recover lost data. Rescuing the data stored inside is the job of a data recovery service.

When data storage devices become inaccessible, there’s a risk of losing irreplaceable files — like treasured family photos or important work documents. In such cases, before sending the computer or storage device in for manufacturer repair (and risking permanent data loss), the solution is to turn to a data recovery service.
